About Reynolds Number

The Reynolds number (Re) is a dimensionless ratio of inertial to viscous forces in a fluid, predicting whether flow is laminar (smooth) or turbulent (chaotic).

How It Works

Re = ρvD/Β΅ = vD/Ξ½. Laminar: Re < 2,300. Transitional: 2,300–4,000. Turbulent: > 4,000. Turbulent flow has 4–10Γ— higher heat transfer and pressure drop than laminar.

Reference Values & Examples

  • Blood in capillary: Re β‰ˆ 0.001 (very laminar)
  • Water in 25 mm pipe at 1 m/s: Re β‰ˆ 25,000 (turbulent)
  • Aeroplane wing cruise: Re β‰ˆ 10⁷ (turbulent boundary layer)
  • Microfluidic chip channel: Re β‰ˆ 0.1–100 (laminar β€” enables precise chemical mixing)

Common Applications

  • Pipe and duct system design
  • Pump and fan selection
  • HVAC and process engineering
  • Hydraulic machinery sizing
  • Chemical and environmental engineering projects

Did You Know?

The Reynolds number β€” determining whether flow is laminar or turbulent β€” was derived by Osborne Reynolds in 1883 using dye injected into glass pipes. His original experimental apparatus is still on display at the University of Manchester.

Common Mistake

Using the same friction factor for all flow regimes. The Darcy friction factor in the Moody chart varies from f=64/Re (laminar) to fβ‰ˆ0.02 (fully turbulent, rough pipe). Using f=0.02 in laminar flow overestimates pressure drop by a factor of 10+ at Re=1,000.
