VOโ Max: The Gold Standard of Cardiorespiratory Fitness
VOโ max (maximal oxygen uptake) measures the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during intense exercise, expressed in mL of oxygen per kg of body weight per minute. It is the single best predictor of cardiovascular health and endurance performance.

VOโ Max Norms (mL/kg/min)
- Men, age 30โ39: Poor <38 | Fair 38โ43 | Good 43โ51 | Excellent 51+
- Women, age 30โ39: Poor <31 | Fair 31โ35 | Good 35โ43 | Excellent 43+
- Elite male distance runner: 70โ85
- Elite female distance runner: 60โ75
How to Improve VOโ Max
- High-intensity interval training (HIIT): Most effective method. 4 ร 4-minute intervals at 90โ95% Max HR, twice per week.
- Consistent Zone 2 training: Builds aerobic base over months.
- Altitude training: Increases red blood cell production.
VOโ max declines ~1% per year after age 25 without training but responds strongly to exercise at any age.
