Tip Calculator: Getting the Maths Right at the Table
Tipping in restaurants, hotels, and taxis is standard in many countries. Calculating the right amount and splitting the bill fairly — especially with different orders and varying tip preferences — is where quick mental arithmetic often fails.
The Basic Formula
Tip amount = Bill × tip %
Per person = (Bill + Tip) ÷ number of peopleQuick Reference Table
- 10%: Move decimal one place left (£48.50 → £4.85)
- 15%: Find 10%, then add half again (£4.85 + £2.43 = £7.28)
- 20%: Divide by 5 (£48.50 ÷ 5 = £9.70)
Tipping Norms by Country
- USA: 15–20% expected at restaurants; 18–22% for good service
- UK: 10–12.5% optional; often added as service charge already
- Canada: 15–18% standard
- Australia: Not expected but appreciated; 10% for excellent service
- Japan/South Korea: Tipping considered rude; service included
- Nigeria/West Africa: 5–10% appreciated at mid-range and above venues
- Europe generally: Round up or 5–10%; 15%+ is US-influenced
Service Charge vs Tip
Always check your bill before tipping. A "service charge" or "discretionary gratuity" already added to the bill is effectively a tip — adding more on top is optional and up to you. In the UK, restaurants that add a service charge are required to disclose how much goes to staff.
